The apartment complex in San Pawl il-Baħar is a challenging multi-storey residential development comprising two basement levels and an eight-storey structure above. The scale and height of the development, combined with the complexity of its architectural configuration, required careful coordination between the architectural and structural designs. One principal engineering challenge was the presence of high-pressure points and concentrated structural demands within the building. These areas required detailed structural assessment and careful consideration of load transfer, stiffness, and localised stresses to ensure that the structure could safely and efficiently accommodate the imposed loads. The interaction between the various structural elements was analysed to achieve a reliable and continuous load path throughout the building. The project was further complicated by significant architectural constraints, which limited the flexibility available for positioning structural elements and required the structural system to respond closely to the architectural layout. The design therefore involved a balance between structural efficiency, constructability, and the need to preserve the intended architectural spaces and configurations.Through detailed structural analysis and close coordination with the architectural requirements, an effective engineering solution was developed to address the complex loading conditions and spatial constraints.
